Homemade Chocolate Milk Recipe

Chocolate milk is a treat in my home, and not something we have regularly. Occasionally my kids request it, but I usually avoid buying chocolate milk because the ingredients in store-bought options typically contain ingredients I am not a fan of. The few times I tried to make it from scratch, it just did not turn very well, and the cocoa powder never quite dissolved right.

Using Hershey’s chocolate syrup is another option that I am not opposed to on a rare occasion, but again, that is another ingredients list to contend with that I do not like (at all) and do not want an entire bottle in my home that I may find hard to resist.

Ingredients in Hershey’s chocolate syrup: High Fructose Corn Syrup; Corn Syrup; Water; Cocoa; Sugar; Contains 2% Or Less Of: Potassium Sorbate (Preservative); Salt; Mono- And Diglycerides; Xanthan Gum; Polysorbate 60; Vanillin, Artificial Flavor.

This recipe was inspired by one of my favorite blogs to follow, 100 Days of Real Food, who uses pure maple syrup instead of honey.





•  1 cup of milk
•  1.5-2 tablespoons honey (I prefer the Raw honey)
•  1 tablespoon Cocoa powder or Cacao

Add the milk into a blender first, then add the Cocoa powder and honey. If you do not add milk first, the honey and cocoa powder may settle at the bottom of the blender and not fully dissolve. You could start with less of the cocoa and honey, and add more according to taste since it is easy enough to modify. I like mixing this in the blender because it really helped to dissolve the cocoa powder and created a creaminess in the drink.

To make chocolate syrup to use separately for other purposes, just do equal parts honey and cocoa powder. Again, I prefer the Raw honey.

You could easily take this and add to it, creating any number of beverages like coffee for a mocha coffee (hot or iced), add ice cream and/or banana for a milkshake (maybe a few drops of vanilla extract), peanut butter and banana for an energy building smoothie….there are no limits! Bottoms up!
